My first day of work this week is in the can, four more to go. As expected, it was a very stormy day today in Toledo, but unfortunately due to low staffing I wasn't able to get any radar training. We have had 3 or 4 rounds of thunderstorms today, with another one approaching as I type. This weather is expected to continue through tomorrow. This rain is excellent news for my yard.
Today's weather provided a good opportunity to test out my mobile scanner setup. For my Radio Shack handheld scanner I have a plastic mount that attaches to one of the air vents above my Jeep's AM/FM radio and climate controls. Right now I'm just using a "rubber ducky" antenna until I can get an external antenna mounted. Anyhow, I left work just before the second line of storms came through to pick up dinner for the guys. I set up the scanner and tuned it to the National Weather Service to keep updated on what was going on. There were severe thunderstorm warnings for all the counties north and south of Toledo, but the storm that hit us evidently didn't reach severe criteria. Without the scanner I probably wouldn't have known that, since the local FM stations are so reluctant anymore to stop the music and break in with weather info.
As well as the radio did, the mount is still a little rinky-dink. It's almost too much weight for the air vent, and every once in a while the vent cover wants to pop out. Eventually, I want to come up with a better radio mounting solution.
I've been able to change my work schedule so that I'm working evenings both tomorrow and Sunday. Monday and Tuesday I'm back to day shifts. Then it's back to Fort Wayne Wednesday and Thursday for repair and service on the Jeep.
