Day 2 in Florida
The second full day spent in Florida was a trip off the beaten path. We visited Carrabelle, FL, which is over 100 miles east of Destin, to check on a WWII Amphibious Engineers museum to which my dad donated memorabilia from my grandfather's Army unit. I'm happy to report that the museum is doing quite well. The route to and from Carrabelle is mainly straight, 2-lane road surrounded by piney woods. Occasionally there were views of the sound, which in that area is separated from the Gulf by narrow barrier islands several miles out from the mainland. On the way back we stopped at a local restaurant (I had fresh-caught grouper), Crooked River Lighthouse, and the small fishing villiage of Apalachicola.
Pictured is a fishing boat in Apalachicola and also Crooked River Lighthouse, which is currently out of commission and is awaiting restoration by a local organization.
