Time for the ultimate in sports entertainment...playoff hockey!! It actually began last Friday, and has been great so far. The weather today is certainly fitting; it's 40 degrees outside, cold enough for me to have the fireplace on. Tuesday is my Friday, so this will be a relaxing "Friday" night after a somewhat frustrating workweek, centered around the great game.
Right now the tape delay of last night's Toledo Storm (ECHL) playoff game is on; I don't know the outcome, but they're losing 3-1 halfway through. There are 4 NHL games tonight, beginning at 7:00 and continuing through the wee hours (especially if we see multiple overtimes again).
I know I don't blog about it much, but my favorite team is the Red Wings. So far they are struggling in the first round, as they normally do every year it seems. This year's first round opponent is Edmonton, and they are employing a suffocating defensive scheme known as the "trap" that has worked very well against the Red Wings for over a decade. The Wings always seem slow to adjust to the trap, and in many of the last few years the offense has completely dried up, leading to first or second round exits.
The Detroit/Edmonton series is currently tied 1-1, but hopefully the Wings can break through big tonight. It will be interesting to see if this year's new, creative coaching staff can facilitate a solution to the trap better than in past years.
About the only other surprise in the league is how both conferences' #7 seeds lead the #2 seeds 2 games to 0. It doesn't look like many first round series' will be blowouts, and we may see several go to 7 games. It will be fun to see how this first round plays out.
